Social media is a great way to stay informed and connected, but we often spend too much time checking the sources.  Typically, the news media gives us all the bad stuff and we fail to hear the good God is sharing with us.  Isaiah heard the voice of God in a quiet whisper.  How often do you tune out the noise so you can hear the voice of God in your life?

In the Book of James the writings are concerned exclusively with ethical conduct, the value of trials and temptations, and a warning to be persistent in prayer.  There are many examples throughout history and in Scripture of trials and persecutions, and those who persevered.   In Psalm 121, we are reminded, “My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

We do not have to look far to find despair and sadness around us.  The national news may prompt concern and a need to pray for the world we live in, but even sitting in a doctor’s office, we see that people are hurting, sometimes with more than physical pain.  The details of healthcare are stressful enough to make a person sick.  We are ultimately responsible for taking care of our body by the lifestyle we choose, the amount of exercise we get, and the food we eat.  We do have choices that will affect the outcome of our health and happiness, but there is still going to be suffering.  Some situations are out of our control!  Life is challenging!  But remember, our hope is in the Lord!

God gives us the gifts we need to make the world a better place.  If you live your life so that others may see Jesus in you, then you are using your gifts.  The importance of loving your neighbor deals not only with works and feelings, but also with how our union with God is affected by our actions.  If we renounce our own will and are obedient to God’s will, with the help of His grace, true union is attained. There are limits in life; but if we sense God’s presence in everything, all things are possible!  It really is simple – sin separates us from God; God’s grace gives us the strength to overcome the temptation of sin.  It is much easier to die to self with God leading the way.  No earthly event can trouble a soul in complete union with God because God’s mercy is never exhausted!

A plan for a spiritual health check is very important, and the opportunities are available to us in the Sacraments free of charge.  We allow a doctor to use invasive procedures when we need medical attention.  We schedule oil changes and tire rotations for better performance in our car.

Well, the soul’s spiritual journey also needs attention to create stability and perfect union with God.  If we make this spiritual screening a priority in our busy lives, just as we make appointments for our health and mechanical issues, we certainly will notice a difference in our daily performance.  If we profess to believe in God, maker of heaven and earth, why wouldn’t we dedicate a portion of our day to Him?  When we nurture this relationship, we become the best version of ourselves.

God’s covenant love for us throughout salvation history is beautifully explained in Scott Hahn’s book, “A Father Who Keeps His Promises.”  The Scriptural timeline and stories are proof of God’s patient love; and even when the news in our world is not good, we are reminded that there is always hope!  God made us in order to use us as He planned – be prepared, and schedule regular spiritual checkups!

June 27th is the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.  The gospel from Matthew for the day reads, “Come to me, all who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.”  Tune out the noise of the world and spend time with Jesus.  He loves us so much! Amen!
