What's Your EDC?

It occurs to me that we have another amazing opportunity to evangelize using social media, where hashtags rule; or, put another way, #hashtagsrule.

Humor me. If you’re on Instagram, open the app and search for the hashtag #edc. You should find more than 8.6 million posts that include it.

EDC stands for Every Day Carry, and you’ll see how IG users incorporate #edc in their posts. The vast majority of posts reflect self-defense or “being prepared.” I couldn’t find any posts, however, that reflect being prepared to handle the daily spiritual warfare we all encounter.

Let’s change that.

Do you carry a Rosary? Prayer card? Do you have a prayer app on your phone?

Take photos of them, and post them to your social media accounts. The only text you need is that hashtag … #edc. My first #edc post of this kind will be up before this column appears in The Message. I’m curious to see what kind of reactions I get.

I will post the photo that appears with this column, which shows some of my #edc for use in spiritual warfare.

If you don’t feel right posting a photo with just the #edc hashtag, let me suggest a New Testament passage you might also include: “For, although we are in the flesh, we do not battle according to the flesh, for the weapons of our battle are not of flesh but are enormously powerful, capable of destroying fortresses” (2 Corinthians 10: 3-4). #edc

Here’s another suggestion: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,I will fear no evil, for you are with me;your rod and your staff comfort me” (Psalm 23:4). #edc 

One more; it’s one of my my favorites: “The LORD bless you and keep you! The LORD let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you! The LORD look upon you kindly and give you peace!^” (Numbers 6:24-26).#edc 

I suspect that we could start a whole new wave of #edc posts with this approach. I hope I’m right, and I hope you’ll join me in the effort.
