When I was hungry you fed me

Catherine Bell is a high school student who is a parishioner at St. Joseph Parish in Jasper.

This winter she traveled to Bloomington, Ind., with 10 other people from Jasper to hand out sandwiches to the homeless. The experience “made me see God that day,” she writes in the parish newsletter, noting “how desperate these people were to find food.”

“In those few minutes I saw real sacrifice of humility from the homeless to reach out and ask for their next meal. The way they looked at you when you handed the lunches was pure gratitude, and all of them thanked us over and over.

“One man hugged each of us, saying, ‘God bless! Thank you!’ Thinking of them so happy for those brown paper lunch sacks made me realize what I’ve been taking for granted – the love I’ve been shown every day, and God’s continual care for me that I hardly notice.

“These people are just like anyone else – they are searching for their Savior, the one that will feed them, provide warmth, shelter, care and love.”
