The opportunities of Lent

“Lent gives us the opportunity each year to work on the basics of our constant call to ongoing conversion,” writes Father Michael Madden in the newsletter for Sacred Heart Parish in Schnellville and St. Anthony Parish in St. Anthony.

He suggests looking at the three traditional categories referred to in tradition.

• Prayer/devotion/meditation nourished by spiritual reading gives breath to our living faith.

• Fasting/penance/self-denial strengthens the will.

• Almsgiving/sacrificing for others/charity deepens our compassion and helps us learn to enjoy being a blessing to others and become more like our magnanimous God!
