Questions answered

Father Eugene Schmitt, pastor at St. Raphael Parish in Dubois and St. Peter Celestine Parish in Celestine, answers a couple of questions in a recent parish bulletin:

He writes, “Here are a couple of things you may have wondered about:

“Are there ever grounds for the seal of Confession to be broken by a priest? The answer is no. A priest cannot even break the seal if he is on the witness stand at a trial and asked to reveal anything from a confession. A priest cannot bring up anything about a past confession to that person at a later date.

“What do the different vestments symbolize that priests and deacons wear? The alb (white garment worn underneath by priests, deacons and servers) represents the new and immaculate vestment that is received through baptism. A chasuble is the outer vestment a priest wears that symbolizes the virtue of charity and the yoke of unselfish love. A dalmatic is the outer vestment worn by a deacon and symbolizes joy and happiness that are the fruits of dedication and service to the Lord. A stole (a long narrow band several inches wide and same color as chasuble and dalmatic) represents the official liturgical role that a priest or deacon is in at that time.”
