The University of Evansville and the Evansville Courier & Press have named Reitz Memorial High School art teacher Mark Schoenbaum Vanderburgh County’s 2015 High School Teacher of the Year.

Officials and Schoenbaum’s family surprised him with the award at the high school. He will join two other Vanderburgh County teachers and one principal at UE’s School of Education banquet on May 1. Other honorees are Elementary School Teacher of the Year Carolyn Bennett, who teaches third grade at Highland Elementary School; Middle School Teacher of the Year  Angela Greenwell, who teaches at Helfrich Park STEM Academy; and Building Principal of the Year Bryan Perry, principal at Thompkins Middle School.

The Courier & Press and UE will present each honoree with a crystal apple and $1,000.

“I was looking at the other contestants and thought, ‘Wow, there are some really good people out there,’” Schoenbaum told Courier and Press reporter Richard Goatee. “So I was very surprised.”
