Why do we kneel, stand and sit?

Father Eugene Schmitt writes in the bulletin at St. Raphael Parish in Dubois and St. Peter Celestine Parish in Celestine: “Why do we kneel, stand and sit at different times during the Mass?

“Well, there are different levels of reverence.

“Kneeling is considered the strongest form of reverence. Standing is the next greatest form of reverence and sitting is the least form of reverence.

“For example, we sit during the proclamation of the First Reading, Responsorial Psalm and Second Reading. Therefore, the Gospel requires a greater form of reverence because of its importance.

“We kneel during the Eucharistic Prayer because this is when heaven and earth are united and the Holy Spirit comes down, working through the priest, to turn the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. This is the utmost time to show reverence.

“During and after Communion, we also kneel or stand until the Hosts are returned to the tabernacle.

“Obviously, those unable to kneel or stand are showing just as much reverence by sitting throughout the Mass.”
