The huge crowd at the Posey County 4H Center kept the bidding lively and fast-paced during the live auction, which followed a great barbecue dinner.

After attending the March 14 auction to benefit St. Matthew Catholic School in Mt. Vernon, I had a hunch that the final totals would be worth waiting for.

That was an understatement.

The 15th annual benefit auction netted more than $87,000 for the school, which has operated in Posey County since 1866. The 2014 and 2015 net amounts raised are Nos. 1 and 2 all time, respectively; and average annual net for the 15 auctions held to date is more than $63,000.

And as historic as those statistics are, the 2016 figure will be the king of the hill for one simple reason.

At some point during the 2016 event, the total raised for St. Matthew School from the auctions will top $1 million.

Over the years, auction proceeds have paid for new technology like iPads for students, classroom computers and interactive whiteboards; new windows and roofs for the school; and upgrades to security and heating systems.
