Father Alex Zenthoefer, pastor of Evansville's Annunciation of the Lord Parish, encourages students to become louder Angels as they celebrate the new mascot May 14 during a school assembly.

Annunciation Catholic School in Evansville held a special assembly May 14 to welcome the Angels to its Christ the King and Holy Spirit campuses. Pastor Father Alex Zenthoefer announced the selection of Angels as the new school mascot.

A July 2014 merger brought Christ the King and Holy Spirit parishes together as Annunciation of the Lord Parish. Both school campuses remained open, and each maintained its mascot – Christ the King Crusaders and Holy Spirit Cougars. Now, Angels will call both campuses home.

“After a process of seeking input from our school children and gathering other information, the new mascot for our school will be the Annunciation Angels,” Pastor Father Alex Zenthoefer wrote in the Annunciation bulletin for the weekend of May 16-17.

“Here at Annunciation Parish, we have started something new,” he continued. “It’s a new family with new customs, a new identity and a new mission. We identify the Angels as our mascot because in some way they capture this new identity and mission. The word Angel means messenger. Their mission is to pass on the message that God is sending to all of creation.

“The Angels protect and defend all of us from everything that might turn our attention away from God,” Father Zenthoefer added. The Angels also encourage those who are called by God for a particular purpose. I am inviting our school children and all of our parishioners to take on a new mission – a mission to be messengers, to be guardians, to be a source of encouragement to others. I am inviting you to be Angels of Annunciation Parish and School.”

A Skype connection between the Christ the King and Holy Spirit campuses enabled the entire student body, and the faculty and staff, to participate in the announcement.
