Giving thanks and praise

“May 29 was the 34th anniversary of my ordination to the priesthood," Father Kenneth Walker writes in the bulletin at St. John the Evangelist Parish in Loogootee.

“I was ordained by Bishop Shea on a Friday evening here at St. John. My first Mass was celebrated also at St. John on Sunday, May 31.

“Little did I know that I would one day return as pastor of our newly-formed St. John the Evangelist Parish. I have been very happy as a priest for these 34 years, but I must admit that since I have returned to Loogootee, this is the happiest time in my priesthood.

“I give thanks and praise for the opportunity to be here as your pastor and ask the Lord to give me the grace to serve you well.”

Happy Birthday!

Father Stephen Lintzenich was ordained to the priesthood June 22, 1974. He is a retired priest in the Diocese of Evansville.

One Bread One Cup interns

Maddie Messmer and Luke Messmer have been named as two of 21 participants in the College Ministerial Internship Program at St. Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology this summer.

Their parents are Mark and Kim Messmer of Jasper. Both students attend Marian University.

The College Ministerial Internship Program is a six-week internship for college-age students. Interns come from throughout the United States to be formed in Benedictine spirituality for ministry in the Catholic Church; they are taught by monks and faculty of St. Meinrad Archabbey and its Seminary and School of Theology.

The interns serve as staff, catechists and theological reflection group leaders for the “One Bread, One Cup” summer liturgical leadership conferences for high school youth.

New staff member

Deacon Joe Stofleth has joined the staff at St. John the Baptist Church in Newburgh as the Coordinator of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).

Summer reading and math program

The newsletter at St. Matthew School in Mount Vernon notes, “It is very important that the students continue to read and practice their math facts over the summer.

“As an incentive to do this, we are offering a summer reading and math incentive. In your child’s Friday Folder, you will find a chart to log the number of minutes your child spends reading and practicing math facts each day.

“If your child reaches the goal and brings the chart to school on August 11, he/she will receive a special prize!”
