Francisca Rivas, center, of Huntingburg and Benedictine Sisters Betty Drewes and Joan Scheller lead a procession into Monastery Immaculate Conception Church in Ferdinand prior to a Mass of Commemoration for slain Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero. Rivas carries a photo of Archbishop Romero, who was her great-grandfather's brother. Archbishop Romero, who spoke out against poverty, social injustice and torture during his country's civil war, was killed while celebrating Mass in 1980 in San Salvador. In 1997, Pope John Paul II bestowed the title “Servant of God” on him, and a cause for beatification and canonization was opened. He was declared a martyr by Pope Francis on Feb. 3, 2015, and his beatification took place on May 23.
