When Sam Featherstone approached his parents in early November with the idea for “SamStrong: Search for a Cure,” he had three requests. He wanted to raise as much money and awareness for pediatric brain cancer research as possible; he wanted to hold the event at St. John the Baptist parish in Newburgh; and he wanted those who attended to have fun.

On Dec. 27, Sam was able to witness all three of his goals being achieved as more than 750 teens and adults packed both basketball gymnasiums on the St. John campus for a lively event that raised more than $200,000 for pediatric cancer research at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

“Tonight’s meant to be a fun night for everybody,” Sam’s mother, Tammy Featherstone, told the attendees at the beginning of the event, which featured a silent and live auction. “We hope you have a great time and we hope you came prepared to shop.”

The event was made possible by an army of volunteers that included a core group of what Tammy called “incredible friends,” and which ultimately expanded to include individuals and organizations from throughout the Tri-State.

“Look around you tonight,” Andy Featherstone, Sam’s father, told the crowd. “Look at the magnitude of the event, the number of volunteers, the number of items in the auction. Look at the impact that you are making.”

“This has been a hard journey,” Andy said in conclusion, “But it’s been eased because you’ve been with us every step of the way.” And these words were not meant solely for those who were able to attend the Dec. 27 event, but for everyone who prayed for and supported Sam’s cause.

“With your help tonight, your child, your grandchild, your neighbor’s child, a child you don’t even know, will never have to embark on this journey,” Andy said.
