Helen Kiesel plays the accordion June 21 at Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Haubstadt.

For the past 16 years, the parish has celebrated weekend Masses with polka music during the town’s annual Sommerfest celebration.

Vince Goedde led a choir of Sts. Peter and Paul parishioners and members of other local parishes in a 30-minute concert of worship songs with polka music before weekend Masses.

Goedde said Kiesel and her husband approached him about organizing the Masses in 1999, and the parish celebrated its first Masses with polka music in 2000. Goedde was able to contact a parish in Wisconsin that provided sheet music for a number of worship songs with polka-style arrangements.
