When I saw Reitz Memorial High School Principal Cyndi Schneider on Aug. 3 for the Back to School Mass and other activities, I thanked her for letting The Message know about the faculty and staff plans for the next day.

“We don’t believe we can ask our students to go out and serve the community if we’re not willing to do the same thing,” she said.

So … they did.

Approximately 70 Reitz Memorial teachers, administrators and staff began their day on Aug. 4 with Mass at Annunciation Parish’s Christ the King Church. Reitz Memorial Chaplain and Annunciation Pastor Father Alex Zenthoefer celebrated the Mass.

The group split into teams after Mass and headed off to more than a half-dozen different places around Evansville to work on a variety of things. Groups spent time at the United Caring Shelter, the Dream Center, a Habitat for Humanity build, Annunciation’s Holy Spirit Church, the Ronald McDonald House, the Evansville Rescue Mission, the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store and Little Lambs.

“Our hope was to assist these agencies in the great work that they do every day,” said teacher Kevin Gries, who helped coordinate the day of service.
