Sisters of St. Benedict join the global #GivingTuesday movement

The Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand will be participating in #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of a unique blend of partners – charities, families, businesses, and individuals – to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide.

#GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving -- this year it’s December 1 -- to kick-off the holiday giving season and to inspire people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities and to give back to the charities and causes they support.

The Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand joined the #GivingTuesday movement to offer their supporters the opportunity to channel their generous spirit of the holiday season and to inspire action around charitable giving.

Religious education in Loogootee

“Our religious education classes continue to do well this year,” writes Father Kenneth Walker, pastor at St. John Parish in Loogootee.

“We have a record number of students who are attending from the elementary and the high school.

“Starting in November, our students within the religious education program will be participating fully at some of the 6:15 Wednesday evening Masses.

“Our students are very talented and I appreciate their eagerness to share their abilities with their peer group and indeed all of us.”

Make a Difference grants

Three Catholic schools in the Evansville area have received Make a Difference grants from Youth Resources.

• The student council at Resurrection School in Evansville: The student council wants to make candy grams that they can sell as a fundraiser.  Every student will get a candy gram.  The money raised from the project will be used to purchase items for the Vanderburgh County Humane Society.

• The student council at St. Joseph School in Vanderburgh County: The students will be focusing on following through with various service projects throughout the year.  The group has nine different shelters in mind where they would like to serve; one for each month.

• The fourth grade military service project at St. Wendel School in St. Wendel:  The fourth grade students will connect with local soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Throughout the school year, the students will write letters to the soldiers and send them packages.  At Christmas and Easter, care packages will be sent to individuals who are serving in war areas or on domestic leave.
