Lenten fasting and abstinence

“Both fasting and abstinence can trace their usage back to the Old Testament times, and the concept of intentionally limiting the amount of or types of food eaten was not foreign to the first Christians,” writes Father Eugene Schmitt, pastor of St. Raphael Parish in Dubois and St. Celestine Parish in Celestine. “To them, it was not only a sign of one’s sorrow and penance before God, but it was also a pious work that helped unite them more closely to the passion of Jesus. To physically deny oneself by fasting and abstaining serves as a tangible reminder of the suffering endured by Christ at His Passion.”

Looking for old photos from St Joseph, Jasper

“I thought I might try to see if anyone has in their possession any pictures taken during the construction of St. Joseph Church,” writes Father Ray Brenner, pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Jasper. “Now I know that none of you were around at that time, but perhaps in some old scrapbook of your ancestors there may be some (photos). I would be willing to have copies made of them and then return the originals to you. At one time, I even heard that there was a set of blueprints in existence for the construction (of St. Joseph Church). Those, too, could be copied and returned.”

The Emmaus Group at Nativity Parish in Evansville is celebrating its third anniversary. “Once again,” an email to The Message states, “the Emmaus Group thanks  Father Julian Cardona for the initiative of founding the Emmaus Group, giving us a path where the Hispanic community of Nativity, following the example of the disciples of Emmaus, meets every week to grow in faith, fellowship and brotherhood.”
