St. John the Baptist Parish in Newburgh recently embarked on a Lenten Food Drive to celebrate the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. The goal was set at 10,000-or- more shelf-staple grocery items – a tremendous response to help feed the 100-140 households in the 47630 zip code served monthly by the Newburgh Area Food Pantry.

St. John the Baptist School also coordinated a Food Drive for Lent, asking students to collect and bring in different food items each week.

"Ten thousand cans will help tremendously to get us through the summer need," said Carol Schmitt, director of the Newburgh Food Pantry. "Thank you to all who have donated and participated. We appreciate everything, and every bit helps."

St. John the Baptist will continue collecting items through Palm Sunday, and then move them to the Food Pantry as Holy Week and Easter nears. Those wishing to help can drop off food items in the narthex of the church by the end of the day on Palm Sunday (March 20). For more information, call the parish office at (812) 490-1000.
