Singer, composer and recording artist ValLimar Jansen will visit Evansville Aug. 26-27 to lead the annual Diocesan Catechists Formation Day, and also to lead an Evening of Reflection on Mercy that is part of the diocesan observance of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy.

The latter event, which is free and open to the public, is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on Aug. 26 at St. Benedict Cathedral in Evansville. Jansen will combine storytelling, a prayer service and a concert into the evening of reflection.

“We shine this bright light in performance, music, storytelling, scripture, preaching, and reflection.” Jansen says in her video, “ValLimar Jansen, a Closer Look.” ”I shine this bright light … so we can see the beauty of God that’s inside of us.”

Her theme for Formation Day is “Proclaiming Jesus’ Message of Mercy and Hope.” The sixth annual event will take place from 8 a.m. CT to 2 p.m. CT on Aug. 27 at the Catholic Center.

During the evening of reflection at St. Benedict, Jansen will draw the audience into a scripture story and allow them to experience it in a very personal way. Her performances are not easily categorized. Instead, she creates a hybrid of platforms to immerse the audience in the sharing of scripture.

“ValLimar’s very alive. Young people really enjoy her,” Kathy Gallo, Diocesan Director of Catechesis, said. “Because of her music and her storytelling, the way she really breaks open the scripture...she’s just one of those dynamic people.”

Gallo welcomes educators and everyone involved in the faith formation of Catholics of all ages to register for Formation Day.

Gallo hopes Jansen’s abilities to share the Gospel in an engaging way and interact with scripture will energize catechists. The performer’s ability to incorporate music, drama and storytelling with any catechetical lesson will serve to enhance the experience of all learners.

Other speakers participating in the Catechist Formation Day include Dominic Faraone of Catholic Charities, diocesan coordinator of family life and respect life activities; former diocesan Director of communications Paul Leingang, his wife Jane, Oldenburg Franciscan Sister Jane McConnell of St Mary’s Hospital in Evansville, Father Pascal Nduka, associate pastor of Annunciation Parish in Evansville,  and Sharon Vogler, parish catechetical leader at Evansville’s All Saints Parish.

Registration for Formation Day  is $25 per person. For more information or to register online, please visit http://goo.gl.yzs934 or contact the Office of Catechesis at 812-424-5536.
