Durchholz Family Returns To Assist At Saint Meinrad
In 1982, brothers John, Larry and Albert Durchholz joined family members from Evansville to help the Benedictine Monks of Saint Meinrad Archabbey move into their new monastery. More than 30 years later, the original Durchholz moving crew returned to St. Meinrad with a few new members to assist once again.
The monastery closed May 15 in order to begin much-needed repairs to the monks’ living quarters, including replacement of the flooring and repair of the HVAC system. The Benedictines’ personal items and furniture were removed, and residents were moved temporarily to the student dormitory.
On Aug. 1, volunteer crews began moving the monks and their belongings back into their cells. John, Larry and Albert were joined by Larry’s two sons, Larry Jr. and Mark; nephew William; and John’s wife, Marilyn. Ron Keller, Oblate Ed Karas, Oblate George Thompson and other volunteers also assisted from Aug. 1-5.
Approximately 90 monks live permanently at Saint Meinrad.
