Middle school students at Resurrection Catholic School in Evansville entertained the elementary students as well as families and visitors with an epic lip sync battle on Feb. 1.  The four houses of Aquinas, Hildegard, Isadore and Scholastica presented their dance moves seeking the loudest applause from their peers while celebrating Catholic Schools Week.

The house system program organizing Resurrection school’s fifth through eighth graders has been an incredibly positive addition to the Resurrection middle school.  The four houses compete for points throughout the year earning rewards such as free dress days.  But more importantly, the house format helps the students get to know each other and build community.  “Years ago we went through great tragedy here, and one of the students at that time said, ‘I don’t feel like I know the younger kids as well as I’d like to.’” Principal Theresa Berendes recalls. “This is just our way of integrating 5th through 8th grade so it’s all positive.”

Being part of a larger community also helps fourth graders look forward to what can be a difficult transition while moving to middle school. Berendes credits her teachers for planning and organizing quarterly competitions and leading the houses.  “As you’ve heard it’s all positive,” Berendes said, “and for our kids, really special.”
