Students and staff at St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Newburgh celebrated National Pink Shirt Day on Feb. 22.  Pink Shirt Day originated in Nova Scotia when two high school boys wore pink shirts to school in support of another student who had been getting bullied for wearing pink.

The campaign has spread worldwide, and St. John has embraced the mission of Pink Shirt Day throughout the month of February by celebrating Random Acts of Kindness Week; focusing classroom discussion on bullying prevention; and promoting kindness in the school.

A t-shirt design-contest was held, and pink shirts were sold with proceeds benefiting the school’s character-education programming. In addition to the sea of pink at St. John, the school held an assembly with guest speaker Matt Hart, who presented his ReACT to Bullying presentation.
