Archers Earn Honors At State Competition

Young archers from Diocese of Evansville Catholic schools turned in strong performances March 11 at the National Archery in the Schools Program Indiana State Championships, held at the State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.

 

Competitors from 11 local east and westside schools shot in two disciplines - the traditional NASP program featuring two-dimensional paper targets and a 3D International Bowhunting Organization competition.

 

In the NASP 2D tournament, Reitz Memorial High School Senior Morgan Daily placed first overall and classmate Cody Powell of Memorial placed third overall in their respective classes.

 

Seth Hansen of Good Shepherd Catholic School in Evansville placed first in middle school boys overall, while Alyssa Schulz of St. Benedict Cathedral School in Evansville took second place in the middle school girls class.  

 

Elementary students performed well in their respective categories as well: Gunner Kirsch of Westside Catholic School in Evansville placed second and Charlotte Fredrich of Holy Rosary School in Evansville placed third overall in individual competition.

 

The Reitz Memorial Tiger Archery team placed second in overall team scores. St. Benedict Cathedral Middle School team earned a third place overall; Westside Catholic Elementary also earned a third place in state standings.

 

Diocesan teams also excelled in the 3D shooting competitions. Reitz Memorial High School,  St. Benedict Cathedral Middle School, and Westside Catholic School elementary teams earned first place in team competition.

 

Individual honors in the high school girls category went to Rebekah Matherly, second place, and Morgan Daily, third place, both of Reitz Memorial High School.  

 

St. Benedict Cathedral students Matthew Hudson and Max Ante earned first and third place respectively in the middle school boys category, while Alyssa Schulz earned first for middle school girls.  Emma Farmer of Westside Catholic placed third.


Charlotte Fredrich of Holy Rosary placed first and Josie Collins of Good Shepherd placed second in the elementary girls class. Gunner Kirsch of Westside Catholic placed first and Isaac Deeg of St. Philip school in Mount Vernon placed second in the elementary boys category.


Thousands of young people compete each year in the NASP championship held in Indianapolis. The NASP National Championship will be held in Louisville, Ky. from May 11-13.  For a listing of all competitors and their results, visit http://indiananasp.com/.
