Aurora Opens New Home In Evansville
“In his great love for all of us, Christ said that whatever we do for the least among us, we do for him,” Bishop Charles C. Thompson prayed as he led the blessing of Aurora, Inc.’s new location at 1001 Mary Street in Evansville. Joined by Pastor Andy Payton of Methodist Temple in Evansville, Bishop Thompson led prayer for the large crowd of guests gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 7.
Brian Kerney, Executive Director of Aurora, welcomed the many groups involved in this project, including the IBEW Local 16, the Ind./Ky./Ohio Council of Carpenters, the Department of Metropolitan Development, the Commission on Homelessness, the Southwest Indiana Chamber of Commerce and the employees and clients of Aurora.
“Aurora is about housing our homeless. This is our community, the homeless are our neighbors, our friends; this is our issue to own,” Kerney said. “Helping those individuals whose families are experiencing homelessness is not only the moral thing to do, it’s just the right thing to do.”
The upgraded space will allow for more services to be offered. The increased square footage allows for every case manager to have their own office space, critical to providing private and confidential care. Dining areas, meeting spaces, showers and laundry facilities will also be provided.
Aurora has been serving the homeless community since 1988, led by the belief that the community will be stronger when every man, woman and child have a safe, decent and sustainable place to call home. Aurora serves more than 1,000 men, women and children each year through six programs and services.
