Happy anniversary!
Father Eugene Schroeder, pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Vanderburgh County, was ordained to the priesthood April 27, 1979.
Father Benny Alikandayil Chacko, associate pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Vincennes and St. Philip Neri Parish in Bicknell, was ordained to the priesthood April 29, 1998.
Father William Traylor, associate pastor at St. Joseph Parish in Jasper, was ordained to the priesthood April 30, 1976.
Celebrating Earth Day Events
We show our respect for the Creator and care for the earth each year on Earth Day, celebrated on April 22. As Pope Francis stated in his writings On Care for Our Common Home, “Once we start to think about the kind of world we are leaving to future generations, we look at things differently; we realize that the world is a gift which we have freely received and must share with others. Since the world has been given to us, we can no longer view reality in a purely utilitarian way, in which efficiency and productivity are entirely geared to our individual benefit. Intergenerational solidarity is not optional, but rather a basic question of justice, since the world we have received also belongs to those who will follow us.”
Celebrate Earth Day with White Violet Center for Eco-Justice
The largest and longest-running Earth Day celebration in West Central Indiana will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET on April 22 at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, located 10 minutes northwest of downtown Terre Haute.
This year’s celebration will offer a host of exhibits, mini-workshops, pony rides, animal and bird shows, alpaca shearing, handmade goods and more.
Workshops will take place throughout the day on a variety of topics, including learning how to contact or interact with legislators, how to conduct a home energy self-audit, cooking workshops and climate change activism. In addition, the League of Women Voters will be on hand to discuss voter registration.
Back this year will be Silly Safari and Mark Booth’s Take Flight! Wildlife Education programs.
Silly Safari, based in Acton, Indiana, will offer interaction with the audience, as those attending will have the chance to interact with several animals during the presentation.
There will be guided tours of White Violet Center for Eco-Justice’s USDA certified organic garden. Handmade and locally produced items will be for sale, including soaps, alpaca fiber goods, wood carvings, pottery and more.
Vendors will be on hand during the event offering all types of delicacies, including Sati-Babi, Petty Pit Stop and Kettle Korn. The Sisters of Providence will offer a bake sale and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich bar for children.
A play area for children will also be available.
Admission is free, but free-will offerings will be accepted at the entrance gates.

Milkweed Plant Giveaway During Hartman Arboretum Open House
Spring has arrived at Hartman Arboretum, and everyone is invited to attend a free Open House from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. CT on April 29 to see the many plants in bloom. Milkweed plants will be given away while supplies last. Milkweed is an important nectar plant for many pollinators and the host plant for Monarch butterflies.
Hartman Arboretum was founded in 2001 to provide an outdoor classroom for children, as well as a place where visitors of all ages could enjoy nature and learn about the diversity of trees and shrubs found in Southern Indiana. It has about 500 trees of all varieties. Areas of interest include the wildlife garden, which was planned and developed by master gardeners and includes nectar and host plants for a multitude of butterflies.
Tours of the Arboretum will be conducted by members of Southwestern Indiana Master Gardener Association. Professional arborist Shawn Dickerson will demonstrate the proper techniques of tree planting, compliments of Keep Evansville Beautiful and Vectren.
Hartman Arboretum is located northwest of Evansville at 5939 Spirit Trail. It is one-half mile north of State Road 66 (Diamond Ave.) at Hwy. 65 (Cynthiana Road) near the German Township Booster Club.

Nearly 15,000 Plants for Sale May 6
Nearly 15,000 plants will be for sale at the Vanderburgh 4-H Center Auditorium on May 6 during the “Dig...Plant...Grow!” Plant sale sponsored by the Southwestern Indiana Master Gardener Association, Inc. and Tucker Publishing Group.
Perennial and annual flowers for sun and shade gardens as well as succulents, water plants, vegetables, herbs, houseplants, and beautiful Mother’s Day gifts will be available from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. CT. Master Gardeners will be on hand throughout the day to answer questions about the plants being sold. Ernie Hicks will be available to address questions about backyard gardening, growing tomatoes and the use of raised garden beds. The Vanderburgh 4-H Center is located at 201 E. Boonville-New Harmony Road north of Evansville.
The plant sale provides the financial resources needed by SWIMGA to maintain nearly 20 public gardens in Vanderburgh, Warrick and Posey counties including the 1.2-acre Master Gardener Display Garden in Evansville. In addition to managing the floral gardens, 10,000 pounds of vegetables are harvested by the Master Gardeners and donated to the Tri-State Food Bank each year.

St. John the Baptist Parish to host Philharmonic Chorus
Evansville Philharmonic Chorus Conductor, Andrea Drury, will conduct the Evansville Philharmonic Spring Choral Concert at St. John the Baptist Parish in Newburgh at 7:30 p.m. on April 22.
The chorus will be performing a new Magnificat composed by University of Southern Indiana professor Tom Drury in honor of his wife, Andrea, to commemorate her appointment as director of the Philharmonic Chorus. The technically challenging piece is composed in Latin and will be performed a capella without instrumental accompaniment.
The Evansville Philharmonic Chorus is a volunteer chorus of approximately 100 members which perform major choral repertoire with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. Audience members are invited to a reception immediately following the concert in the church reception hall.
General admission is $15.00 and tickets may be purchased by calling the Philharmonic Box Office at (812) 425-5050 or ordering online atwww.evansvillephilharmonic.org. Tickets may also be purchased at the door one hour prior to the performance. The Spring Choral Concert is sponsored by Friends of the Chorus.
