Russian vocal ensemble LYRA to perform in Jasper

St. Joseph Parish in Jasper will welcome LYRA, a vocal ensemble from St. Petersburg Russia, for a one-night-only event at 7 p.m. ET on May 12.  The group, comprised of professional musicians, performs throughout Russia, Western Europe and annually tours throughout the United States.

The main goal of LYRA’s tour is exploring and popularizing Russian choir music.  The small ensemble will perform a concert which consists of two parts: the first featuring sacred music of the Russian Orthodox Church; the second featuring Russian folk songs.  The sacred hymns are in the Church-Slavonic language (an ancient language) and the various folk songs are in Russian.  One of the singers will make announcements in English throughout the concert telling the audience about the Russian orthodox tradition, church and folk music as well as describing every piece they perform.

Everyone is welcome!  The music LYRA performs will appeal not only to those interested in Russian and world cultures but also to those who love choral music in general.

No tickets are required for the concert, but a freewill offering will be taken at the door.  For more information, please contact the St. Joseph Parish office at (812) 482-1805.

Reitz Memorial Student named Regional Academic All-Star

One Reitz Memorial High School senior has been named a 2017 Indiana Academic Regional All-Star, an honor earned by only 50 high school seniors in the state.

Dalton Walsh was chosen from a field of 264 outstanding nominees from public and private schools around the state. The distinction recognizes seniors who excel in the classroom first and foremost, but who are also actively involved in their schools and communities, and take on leadership roles in those activities.

Each public and private high school accredited by the Indiana Department of Education may nominate one senior for consideration as an Indiana Academic All-Star. From these nominees, a selection committee chose the 40 Indiana Academic All-Stars, along with an additional 50 regional honorees.

Selection of nominees and honorees was based upon the following:

  • A mathematical formula that combines the SAT or ACT composite score and a seven-semester grade-point average.

  • Academic achievements and honors, academic courses, and academic extracurricular activities.

  • Other extracurricular activities, community service, and leadership qualities.

The program is produced by the Indiana Association of School Principals, with support provided by Franklin College, Marian University, Indiana University Bloomington and Purdue University, along with corporate partners Herff Jones, IndyStar.com and Inter-State Studio and Publishing Co.
