The announcement of Pope Benedict XVI resigning his office, effective February 28, is certainly sobering news for everyone. While it has been centuries since the last Pope resigned from his Petrine office, it is not an unprecedented event in Church history. Obviously, like so many, I have mixed emotions about the Holy Father’s announcement.

I have been privileged to meet with Pope Benedict XVI on two occasions. The first such meeting took place during the annual Conference of New Bishops, at Castel Gondolfo (e.g. the papal summer residence), in September 2011. The second occasion occurred during my ad limina visit, in Rome, in February 2012. In fact, I continue to wear the pectoral cross that was presented by Pope Benedict XVI to each bishop during those visits.

It was Pope Benedict XVI who appointed me as Bishop of Evansville. He has certainly proven to be a man of deep faith, great intellect, impeccable loyalty, tremendous dedication and marked humility. Above all, he has been a model of catechetical leadership.  He has exemplified what it means to embrace the three-fold office of Teaching, Sanctifying and Governance.  Those who know him on a more personal level have always spoken of him as being a man of incredible compassion and concern for others.

Always the great teacher, given whatever physical and/or mental struggles that may have prompted his decision, it seems to me that Pope Benedict XVI has sought to use this occasion as a teachable moment.   With a keen sense of reading the signs of the time, he is well adept to grasping the full measure of his decision.  It is quite apparent that he realizes this to be right for the Church at this particular time.

I take this opportunity to express from deep appreciation and continued prayers for Pope Benedict XVI.  At the same time, I invite all to join me in beginning our prayers for the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the forthcoming conclave to select the next pope.
