Winners of the 2017 Catholic Educator Innovative Awards were announced during the Aug. 1 back to school gathering and Mass held at St. John the Baptist School in Newburgh.  Hallie Scheu, principal of St. Wendel School in St. Wendel, and Resurrection Middle School Teachers in Evansville were named as this year’s recipients.

Scheu was nominated for her role in planning and leading Catholic Identity retreats for all St. Wendel students grades kindergarten through eighth-grade.  The retreats were planned with the purpose of strengthening the students’ spiritual journey with Christ while growing in their faith.  Each grade level participated in the retreats, which will build upon each other and cover new areas as the students move into the next grade.

The Resurrection Middle School teachers were nominated for their implementation of a house system for fifth through eighth-graders during the 2016-17 school year. The purpose of the system is to give each student not just a class but a home that they share for the entirety, or remainder of, their middle school career.  The program teaches students about relationships, teamwork, mentoring, leadership and respecting one another.

The Catholic Educator Innovative Award recognizes educators within the Diocese of Evansville who employ novel and innovative efforts to achieve success in student learning and/or promotes growth for the school.  Eligible candidates include teachers, administrators, counselors, media specialists or technology coordinators. Nominations could be submitted by school personnel, pastors, students, parents or grandparents on the basis of accomplishments of an individual or group.
