Jake Martin, 18, built a prayer garden featuring a statue of Our Lady of Fatima at St. Philip Parish in Posey County as his Eagle Scout project. He earned Eagle Scout in August 2017.

As a scout, he served as Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Instructor, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, and Vice President for the Venture Crew. Through scouting he earned his Red Cross Lifeguard Certification and is a Certified Scuba Diver.

Martin also has been very active in St. Philip Parish outside of scouting. He has been attending this parish since he was one-month old, and he chose this project as a way to give back to his parish and community.

The prayer garden has a rock surface with two large boulders and a bench for sitting, and stepping stones that make the entire area easily accessible. Martin included path lights and plenty of overhead lighting for nighttime hours.

Martin is the son of Bob (Troop 399 Eagle Scout) and Anne (Niemeier) Martin. He has a younger brother, Jack.

He is currently attending U.S. Marine Corps boot camp at Parris Island, S.C., where he is training to become a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.

Martin tells The Message that he is very grateful to all those who contributed to this project with their donations of time, talent, treasure, and prayers. The Message is grateful that he and his family shared this information and the accompanying photos with our readers.
