Faith In Action Breakfast Celebrates 'common Goal Of Service'

“We are here today with a common goal of service,” said Dr. Mohammad Hussain, chair of Habitat for Humanity’s Interfaith Advisory Council, as he launched the 16th annual Faith in Action Breakfast held on June 21 at the Islamic Society of Evansville. He welcomed the crowd of approximately 200 guests and thanked event sponsor St. Vincent Evansville for their ongoing support. 

Gina Leckron, director of Habitat for Humanity of Indiana, gave the morning’s keynote presentation. Her message spotlighted housing as the cure to many issues in society and encouraged those in attendance to continue their support of Habitat. Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke introduced Leckron to the clergy and many Habitat volunteers in attendance. 

“Evansville started the first Habitat organization in the state of Indiana,” Leckron said. “Thousands of lives have been impacted by this ministry.” 

Leckron shared the stories of Habitat families who overcame physical and social obstacles to find security by attaining affordable housing. 

“I ask you to continue to break your heart for those in need,” she said. 

Jennifer Moran, Habitat homeowner, spoke of her personal journey with Habitat and encouraged all in attendance with a call to action.  She encouraged all to join “500 Voices for 500 Homes,” a community choir performing at halftime of the University of Evansville men’s basketball game versus Ball State University at 2 p.m. on Dec. 9 at the Ford Center in Evansville.  

Closing the meeting was Father Ed Schnur, pastor of St. Wendel Parish in St. Wendel and St. Francis Xavier Parish in Poseyville, who gave the benediction. 

Before the crowd dispersed, Dr. Hussain encouraged those in attendance to save the date for the groundbreaking of the 500th Habitat Home in Evansville on Aug. 15; time and location of the build to be announced at a later date. Special thanks went out to the faith community consortiums who build houses by partnering with the Habitat for Humanity of Evansville organization.  These include Catholics for Habitat, Lutherans for Habitat, United Church of Christ / Disciples of Christ Churches, Mt. Vernon Ministerial Association, United Methodists for Habitat and the Interfaith Build.
