St. Theresa's Legacy Of Joyful Hope Will Continue

By Special To The Message

For generations, the St. Theresa property on Evansville’s North Side has offered joyful hope to many across Evansville. Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Evansville is excited to announce that St. Theresa’s legacy will continue on the property for generations to come.

Catholic Charities and Habitat for Humanity have entered into an agreement to continue exploring the possibility for subdividing the property, allowing 14 single-family residences to be built in a neighborhood to be named St. Theresa Place. Bishop Joseph M. Siegel has approved the plan, and demolition will begin on Feb. 11, weather permitting.

Since assuming responsibility for the property from Good Shepherd Parish, the diocese and Catholic Charities actively explored ways to best use the property and buildings. Unfortunately, the buildings presented the potential for financial challenges because the estimated costs of repairing infrastructure (e.g. repairs to the roof, boiler, windows, etc.) exceeded $1.4 million.

Ultimately, the decision to build a new building to serve as the permanent home for Catholic Charities was made. Catholic Charities is utilizing the rectory for its social enterprise, Handy Helpers Home Repair. The remaining buildings will be razed. Removing all of the buildings at one time will save money.

The St. Theresa property will serve as one of Evansville’s true beacons of hope and a model for inter-agency collaboration. Catholic Charities will offer a hand up to our brothers and sisters in need through a variety of programs and services. And adjacent to them, families will work side-by-side with Catholics from across greater Evansville to improve their lives through Habitat’s partner program.
