Bishop Gerald A. Gettelfinger, fourth bishop of the Diocese of Evansville, was ordained to the priesthood May 7, 1961.

 

Happy Birthday!

Father Zach Etienne, pastor at Good Shepherd Parish, Evansville, celebrates his birthday May 1.

Father William Traylor, associate pastor at St. Joseph Parish, Jasper, celebrates his birthday May 2.

Anniversaries of ordination

Benedictine Father Gregory Chamberlin, pastor of St. Benedict Cathedral, Evansville, was ordained to the priesthood May 2, 1965.

Benedictine Father Damian Schmelz, pastor at St. Henry Parish, St. Henry, was ordained to the priesthood May 3, 1958.

Father Ron Zgunda, pastor of St. Joseph Parish, Princeton, and Blessed Sacrament Parish, Oakland City, was ordained to the priesthood May 6, 1977.

 

Prestigious

Michael Roesch, campus minister at the University of Evansville Newman Center, writes, “co-director of music ministry Melanie Bacaling has been accepted to the prestigious Boston Conservatory to pursue a master of music degree in vocal pedagogy and performance. Melanie is from Gurnee, Ill., and will graduate from UE in May with degrees in music (vocal performance) and psychology.

“Melanie has been coordinating music and directing the choir for the Newman Catholic Student Center's on-campus Masses for three years. She performed the role of Papagena in UE's presentation of Mozart's opera "The Magic Flute,” and in UE's annual Gumberts Award competition.

 

Fish fry profits

The parish bulletin at Nativity Parish in Evansville reports “We served over 2,500 dinners this year. Our total income was $23,814, and our expenses were $10,740.03. This is a profit of $13,073.97 for the 2013 Lenten Fish Fries.”

 

49 years

Congratulations to Bill and Ruth Schwinghamer, parishioners at St. Joseph Parish in Dale, as they celebrate their forty-ninth wedding anniversary.

 

Long Range Planning

Bob Seib is the president of the Long Range Planning Committee at Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Haubstadt.

Rick Knapp is vice-president, and Brent Lamey is secretary.

Members include Tess Rumble, Carol Wilzbacher, Josh Pack, Alan Wade, Chad Seibert, Jessica Weber, Gregg Maurer, Steve Wilzbacher, Elaine Tenbarge and LeeAnn Kiesel.

 

Youth of the Year

Jossie Hudson, a sixth grader at Resurrection School in Evansville, has been chosen the 2013 Youth of the Year by Youth Resources.

She took part in Operation Barracks which helped collect items for 160 soldiers in Quarter Cav (Big Red 1 Cavalry division of the US Army). She also helped orchestrate the support and writing of letters to the soldiers.

 

Science and engineering

Westside Catholic student Abby Steinkamp received a second place award for best junior plant science project with her entry comparing organic and inorganic fertilizers in the recent Tri-State Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

Westside student  Aaron Gorman received an award of merit from the University of Evansville and a $120 scholarship to the U of E Engineering Summer Camp for his construction and experimentation with hovercraft.

 

Robotics Team Winners

The Mater Dei Robotics team has captured first place at the Vex Robotics Novice challenge. This competition was held at Ivy Tech and is sponsored by Ivy Tech and ALCOA.

Team members include novices Grant Wilmes, Jake Stratman, Levi Weiss, Adam Koewler (operators of X-force), Jared Becker, Grant Glaser, and Jacob Vanbibber (operators of Karen, the other robot), and “vexpert advisors” Mitch Meeks, Adam Berendes, Matt Becker, Craig Wilmes, and Aaron Costlow.
