Anniversary of

Ordination

Bishop Charles C. Thompson, fifth bishop of the Diocese of Evansville, was ordained to the priesthood May 30, 1987.

 

Happy Birthday!

Father Gordon Mann, pastor at Our Lady of Hope Parish, Washington, celebrates his birthday May 30.

Father Adolph Egloff, a retired priest of the Diocese of Evansville, celebrates his birthday June 3. He resides at 2017 N. Second Street, Vincennes, IN 47591.

Father Donald Ackerman, a retired priest of the Diocese of Evansville, celebrates his birthday June 4. He is the social director of retired priests. He resides at 310 W. 4th Street; Jasper IN 47546.

 

Anniversaries of ordination

Father Kenneth Walker, judicial vicar in the diocesan Tribunal, was ordained to the priesthood May 29, 1981. He resides at Sarto Retreat Center in Evansville, and is sacramental minister on weekends at the four parishes in Martin County.

Father James Rogers, a retired priest of the Diocese of Evansville, was ordained to the priesthood May 30, 1939. He resides at St. Paul’s Hermitage, 501 N. 17th Ave., Beech Grove IN 46107.

Father Christopher Forler, pastor at St. Bernard Parish, Rockport, and St. Martin Parish, Chrisney, was ordained to the priesthood May 31, 2008.

Father Edward Schnur, pastor of St. Wendel Parish, St. Wendel, and St. Francis Xavier Parish, Poseyville, was ordained to the priesthood June 1, 1991.

Father Clemens Hut, a retired priest of the Diocese of Evansville, was ordained to the priesthood June 2, 1936. He resides at Friendship Village, 2525 E. Southern Ave., Tempe AZ 85282.

Father Philip Kreilein, pastor of Resurrection Parish, Evansville, and diocesan director of Continuing Education: Ministry to Priests, was ordained to the priesthood June 2, 1974.

Father Ron Kreilein, administrator at Holy Trinity and St. Joseph Parishes, both in Evansville, was ordained to the priesthood June 2, 2007.

Father Brian Emmick, associate pastor at Holy Cross Parish, Fort Branch, St. Bernard Parish, Snake Run, and Sts. Peter and Paul Parish, Haubstadt, was ordained to the priesthood June 2, 2012.

Father Jeff Read, associate pastor at Holy Rosary Parish, Evansville, was ordained to the priesthood June 2, 2012.

Father Robert Deig, a retired priest  of the Diocese of Evansville, was ordained to the priesthood June 3, 1950. He resides at the Little Sisters of the Poor Home in Evansville.

Father Eugene Schmitt, pastor at St. Raphael Parish, Dubois, and St. Peter Celestine Parish, Celestine, was ordained to the priesthood June 3, 2000.

Father Gary Kaiser, pastor of Precious Blood Parish, Jasper, and St. Mary Parish, Ireland, was ordained to the priesthood June 3, 2006.

Father John Brosmer, pastor at St. Joseph Parish, Dale, and St. Nicholas Parish, Santa Claus, and moderator and sacramental minister at Mary, Help of Christians Parish, Mariah Hill, was ordained to the priesthood June 4, 2005.

Father Alex Zenthoefer diocesan director of Vocations, chaplain at Memorial High School, and pastor at Christ the King Parish, both in Evansville, was ordained to the priesthood June 4, 2005.

 

Thank You Celebration

for Helen M. Vásquez

On the evening of May 28, the Guadalupe Center in Huntingburg will host a thank you celebration for Helen M. Vásquez who will be ending her work at the center.

A Spanish Mass will be celebrated for Helen at St. Mary Church in Huntingburg at 6:30 p.m. followed by an Open House at the Guadalupe Center.

She began her work at the center in October of 2001.

The programs that she initiated as program coordinator include

• A youth group that included retreats, a trip to Indianapolis Latino Fiesta, service work in a nursing home, bi-weekly youth meetings, Mother’s Day programs, and participation in the Huntingburg Herbsfest Parade;

• Children’s Summer Camps and Children’s Christmas Party;

• An adult Latino Leadership group that met once a month in 2002. The group is now independent of the Guadalupe Center and is called ALASI (Association of Latin Americans in Southern Indiana);

• Nurse practitioners to offer health care at the Guadalupe Center beginning in August, 2002.

• A reception of the Mexican Consulate in 2002 and the Salvadoran Consulate in 2003.

She took classes through CLINIC (Catholic Legal Immigration Network) and began offering family immigration services in May, 2003. She became BIA (Board of Immigration Appeals) certified and continued to offer services through May of 2013.

In the past 10 years, Helen has handled approximately 350 immigration cases.”

Recognition

Teachers at St. Philip School in Posey County have earned recognition for “outstanding performance in advance reading practice and proficiency,” according to Andrea Lodato Dickel, principal.

“Ellie Naas and Karen Stewart, first grade teachers; Carrie Boehman and Greg Brinkmeyer, second grade teachers, Jenny Burris and Krystal Knust, third grade teachers, and Katie Cummings, fourth and fifth grade language arts teachers, were awarded Accelerated Reader Model and/or Master  Classroom Certification by Renaissance Learning, a Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., based company.

Model and Classroom Certification acknowledge that these teachers’ efforts to promote personalized reading practice, assess comprehension, and monitor progress have resulted in measurable improvements in reading proficiency.

Purdue engineering competition

Mater Dei students Kendra Blankenberger, Adam Koewler, Logan Nicholson and Grant Wilmes have received a fourth place overall finish with their windmill design in the Purdue Engineering Expo.

 

First place

Congratulations to the Green River Greenies 4-H Club for winning first place in the Group Skit Division in the Vanderburgh County 4-H Performing Arts Contest.

Cast members from Good Shepherd School included Nick Folz, Nathan Folz, Sarah Fruit, Mariah Fulton, Katie Jo Hirsch, Jordan, Kristen Lasher, Maria Lasher, Jessica Mueller, Nicole Neisen, Catherine Shafer, Laura Shafer, Lucy Walsh and Dalton Walsh.

 

Steward of the Vineyard

Hilary Hessig has been named the “Steward of the Vineyard” at St. Joseph Parish in Dale. The parish newsletter notes, “Thanks, Hilary, for showing us what it means to be good stewards of St. Joseph Church.”

 

Essay contest

Holly Thieman, a senior at Reitz Memorial High School, Evansville, has won the essay contest sponsored by the East Side Optimist Club in Evansville. Maggie Hagan, also a senior at Reitz Memorial, received second place.
