Feast of the Savior of the World

“Approximately half of the Hispanics in Huntingburg are of Salvadoran descent,” according to Benedictine Sister Karen Durliat, diocesan director of Hispanic ministry,.

“On August 6 El Salvador celebrates the Feast of San Salvador as a public holiday. One of the most popular celebrations is ‘La Bajada.’ La Bajada or ‘The Descent’ is celebrated in honor of the world’s Savior.

“La Bajada symbolizes God in the person of Jesus Christ descending to participate in the world.

“This day is marked by a procession in which the statue of ‘El Divino Salvador’ is carried to the Metropolitan Cathedral in San Salvador. The statue is dressed in purple robes. At the Cathedral there is a giant blue globe representing the world. The statue of Christ disappears into this giant globe. Then a few minutes later El Salvador again emerges from the globe, this time clad in white.

“This represents transfiguration. The figure of Christ emerges to the loud applause and cheers of the tens of thousands of devotees who gather at the square in front of the Metropolitan Cathedral.”

Father Ryan Hilderbrand will celebrate a Spanish Mass at 7 p.m. on August 6 on the “Feast of the Savior of the World” at St. Mary’s Parish in Huntingburg.

Happy Birthday!

Happy anniversary of ordination

Father David Nunning, pastor at St. Agnes Parish, Evansville, and Sacred Heart Parish, Evansville, moderator at St. Matthew Parish, Mount Vernon, and Holy Angels Parish, New Harmony, celebrates his birthday Aug. 3.

He was ordained to the priesthood Aug. 3, 1969.

Deacon anniversary

Deacon Stephen Hall Jr. was ordained Aug. 3, 1985. He is retired.

Flag pole project

The newsletter at St. Nicholas Parish in Santa Claus notes, “Anna Ward and her faithful quilters have been quilting and raffling quilts for over a year to raise money for flag poles at St. Nicholas.

“They have currently raised over $1,500 for this project. It has not been decided to place these flag poles on the southwest corner of St. Nicholas property.

A double Youth Salute

The July Youth Salute at St. Joseph Parish in Dale goes to Gabe and Grant Gogel, the twins sons of Kami and Larry Gogel. They are faithful attendees at religious classes, and servers at Mary, Help of Christians Parish in Mariah Hill and at St. Joseph Parish.
