Becoming Servants Of The Spirit In Oklahoma Relief Efforts

The Darwin Project performed during the fund-raising event at Holy Redeemer Parish in Evansville to benefit victims of the Oklahoma tornadoes that struck May 30, 2013.

Less than two months ago, we – a group of high school and college friends – began discussing the devastating tornado that struck the Moore, Okla., area in late May. Many of us traveled to Joplin, Mo., last summer to help rebuild and we understood from first-hand experience the impact that a natural disaster can have on a community. Guided by God’s grace, we felt a calling to use our time and talents to assist Oklahoma. With plans in our minds, passion in our hearts and Christ as our center, we decided to plan a benefit concert.

With a little over six weeks to pull this event together, diligence and dedication guided our work. Phone call after phone call, meeting after meeting, we searched for food donors; asked for event supplies; and looked for the perfect location. Blessed by the generosity of others, we found much more than that; we encountered a parish, a diocese and a community that offered overwhelming support to their local young adult ministry. Encouragement and prayers flooded inward from every direction; and with that alone, we knew that despite money or numbers, the night would be a success.

We held the event at Holy Redeemer Parish in Evansville. Because of all the support we were given, we were able to work together to raise money for all of the Oklahoma victims. Money was not the source of our success; but instead, the family, friendship and fellowship that arose from the occasion. People enjoyed the hot dogs and hamburgers that Sonic donated as they sat and listened to a local band, The Darwin Initiative. Along with a cornhole tournament and other recreational games like Ultimate Frisbee, guests remained entertained for the evening.

It was beautiful to see so many people coming together to play and laugh while being in community with one another. Our team recognized several touching moments throughout the benefit.

As much as we prayed for the event to be problem free, we were not without challenges. Just after we finished setting up (e.g. putting up posters, cardboard donation boxes, tables, chairs, tents, etc.), a huge wind and rain storm came out of nowhere. Stunned by the unexpected downpour, we stood in despair – soaking wet under a tent – hoping the rain would cease. Finally, the rain ended. And as quickly as we could, our team cleaned up with less than an hour to spare.

Though the rain was unexpected, we were still able to recognize Christ in all of the chaos. First, we learned that we are not in control but merely servants of the Spirit.  At the time, the rain seemed to be an impossible barrier that would ruin all of our endeavors; but God has a way of continually surprising us and blessing us when we are in times of trial. From the rain, a radiant rainbow glistened down upon us. We believe it was Christ watching over the event and reminding us of His unconditional love.

We hope that our efforts and the donations generated to support storm-relief activities will help lessen the troubles Oklahoma has recently encountered. Thank you for working with us and the tornado victims. May God bless you as you continue your selfless work.

            Peace be with you.
