Mary Ann Hughes will become the Managing Editor of the Message on Sept. 30. She will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the paper.

Mary Ann deserves and has earned this promotion. I am confident that the paper will serve our Catholic family more effectively than ever with Mary Ann serving as Managing Editor.

She served as Interim Editor of the Message earlier this year during the diocesan search for a new director of communications. She has been a part-time staff writer for the Message for 28 years – and has earned numerous awards for her work from the Catholic Press Association.

She grew up in Indianapolis, and graduated from Our Lady of Grace Academy there. She earned her undergraduate degree from Indiana University with a double major in English and Radio/TV.

She is a trained spiritual director, studying at Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand.

Mary Ann is married to Steve Barber. They have two children – Katie Barber Stark and Michael Barber – and two grandchildren. She attends St. Mary Parish in Evansville, where she serves as an emcee and as a Eucharistic minister.
