It’s Respect Life Month

“During October each year we focus on the Respect for

Life, writes Deacon Dave Seibert, pastoral life coordinator at St. Theresa Parish in Evansville.

“But too often we have a very narrow view of what this respect for life requires. We usually think first of the abortion issue. In a broader sense we may think of euthanasia. But respect for life goes much farther and much deeper. Respect for life involves our everyday dealings with one another.

“October gives us the opportunity to think also in broader terms, how we as a society and as a culture promote or attack the value of human life. It raises questions about the dignity we give to the elderly and their right to a natural death. We ask questions about immigration and the right of all people to live free from oppression and fear. The right to adequate healthcare and medical services is a part of this respect we show others. “Love of others also means that each person should have a right to meaningful employment that can support themselves and their families. It means that decent housing and safe neighborhoods are necessary. Those who suffer from disabilities, whether physical or mental, deserve our respect and equal access to those services that are necessary for a routine lifestyle.

“As you can see, respect for life entails much more than just the issue of abortion. It is also something that is a concern in the other eleven months of the year. But in October, it is highlighted to help us bring focus on many of these serious issues that continue to face us. Individually we have a responsibility to show kindness to others and a respect for each person’s dignity. In short, we should be treating others like we want to be treated.”
