The importance of the Catechism

How does the average person get a clear and honest answer to their questions about the Catholic faith?

“One way is to use the Catechism of the Catholic Church,” writes Deacon Dave Seibert, pastoral life coordinator at St. Theresa Parish in Evansville.

“Along with the Bible, this is one book every Catholic home should have,” because as a reference tool “it can be quite helpful. Pretty much anything you would want to know about the Catholic Church is explained in clear, easy to understand language.”

He added, “Those of us who remember the pre-Vatican II Church were probably taught from The Baltimore Catechism. The format of this book was a series of questions and answers and was the basis for teaching our faith for nearly 80 years.”

1985, then Pope John Paul II asked the bishops to look at the impact Vatican II had on our Church and to study how this affected our teaching of the Faith and thus our catechism. From those discussions our modern CCC emerged with the final version issued in 1997.”

Deacon David believes that the catechism “helps us to be the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church that Christ established.”
