About the Catechism

Deacon Dave Seibert, pastoral life coordinator at St. Theresa Parish in Evansville, has written a series of columns in the parish bulletin about the “Catechism of the Catholic Church.”

He explains that it begins with a prologue that “gives an overview to who we are and our relationship to God. This is important to understand because it places our Faith in its proper context. Without this relationship our lives would be nothing more than a set of rules to memorize that direct us from birth until death providing little or no hope. However understanding our reason for being puts life in a new light and death as well.

“Now life is a gift from our Creator and an even greater gift of life awaits us after our death. Instead of blindly following a set of rules, the Catechism becomes a guide helping from one gift to another.

The Prologue also briefly describes the purpose of the Catechism and how to use it. Prior to using the Catechism, I would recommend you read these few pages of introduction. You will have a better appreciation for the book and how to get the most from it.”

He explains that the authority of the information in the Catechism comes from many sources. “There is an Index of Citations. This shows sources such as the Bible, writing of the Church Fathers, Conciliar documents, encyclicals, etc. For the ambitious reader these can sometime provide even more information if you are interested.”

St. Patrick Chapel

Father James Koressel writes, “On Thursday, November 14, Bill Weberding of Weberding’s Carving Shop in Batesville, Ind., met with me at St. Patrick Chapel to look over the religious artifacts.

“I asked him to take the statue of St. Patrick and the large crucifix from the south wall with him for the purpose of repairing and refinishing each of them. Upon their return they will find a permanent location inside St. Peter Church.

“Upon consultation with the Judicial Vicar of the Diocese, Father Ken Walker, Bishop [Charles C.] Thompson has advised us to offer to the parishes of the Diocese of Evansville the remaining statues, altars, baptismal font and other items of interest. These artifacts are not to be sold or given to the laity or to non-Catholic churches.

“Recognizing the value of these items, we want to see that they are preserved in a Catholic church. I will keep you informed on the progress of these developments.

“Once the chapel has been cleared of blessed objects, the Corning Heritage Society is interested in receiving the building with the intent of preserving it and its unique architectural properties. The Daviess County Historical Society has already been given care of St. Patrick Rectory. It is not our desire or intent to demolish either building as long as these organizations care for them and prevent them from becoming dangerous to people.”

Father Koressel is pastor at St. Peter Parish in Montgomery and All Saints Parish in Cannelburg.
