Continuing the discussion on the Catechism

Deacon Dave Seibert, pastoral life coordinator at St. Theresa Parish in Evansville, continues his series on the “Catechism of the Catholic Church” with a discussion on part three.

“This part begins with a discussion of the dignity of human life and this is an important starting point. Important because we realize why we are called to live within these boundaries and why we are so unique. As God’s ultimate creation, we have a dignity within creation that sets us apart for something particularly special and winning the game, or reaching our goal, means achieving that special union for which we were created.

“I cannot stress how important it is that we understand this human dignity that we possess. It is on this foundation on which our behavior toward ourselves and others is built. If we don’t appreciate how special we are then we don’t treat ourselves very well do we? If we don’t appreciate how special other people are then we don’t treat them very well either. Our behavior is driven by the value we place on human life.

“The primary focus of the discussion in Part Three is on the rules of the game or the guidelines that help us achieve our goal and stay within the boundaries of our Life in Christ. The Ten Commandments are explained in a way that provides a reason for the commandment, the context in which it is to be observed and the goal that we hope to achieve by following it.

“What may be helpful to note in the reading of this part of the CCC is that the Ten Commandments form a part of the Covenant God made with us. The offer of eternal life is achieved by observance of these rules. Rules which affect our relationship with God, with ourselves and with others. Interestingly you will also see that God also provides us the grace to follow His commands, in other words, helping us to abide by the rules.”
