The Message Editor Tim Lilley has announced that Sheila Barclay becomes Design Editor of the weekly diocesan newspaper, effective immediately.

“When I became director of Communications and editor of The Message last summer, Sheila’s significant contributions to the paper became obvious very quickly,” Lilley said. “Sheila will not have different duties because she truly has been serving as the Design Editor for quite some time. This announcement formalizes something that has been in practice for years.”

She has been a member of the diocesan Communications Office since January of 2000. Her job duties include the layout and creative design of The Message; designing advertisements for customers; designing the annual CPC materials as well as stationery and various materials used by diocesan offices, parishes and schools; working with outside sources for printing needs; maintaining the digital archives of The Message; preparing the Diocesan Yearbook, and doing the prepress preparation of El Informador Latino, the Hispanic newspaper.

She was born in Jasper, and lived with her family in Bloomington and Spencer County, graduating from South Spencer High School.

She earned an associate degree in accounting from Owensboro Junior College of Business. “I have taken a few classes in graphic design, but for the most part I am self-taught,” she said, adding, “I have always been interested in art.”

Her previous work experience includes Bristol-Myers/Mead Johnson, Shoe Carnival, ALCOA, and Acordia/Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. Her interests include acrylic painting, Indiana University basketball and Evansville Icemen hockey, and “spending time with my nieces and nephew.”

“Her work ethic is stellar, and she is most deserving of this recognition,” said Mary Ann Hughes, The Message managing editor.

“We throw cutlines, headlines, photos, graphics, ads, stories and columns at her, and she creates beautiful pages for The Message,” Hughes said, adding, “She’s amazing!”
