Papal challenge

“On March 13 Pope Francis has led our Roman Catholic Church for one year,” writes Father John Boeglin, pastor at Holy Family Parish in Jasper.

“The world has been impressed with his style of leadership. He always has a pleasant smile. In public audiences the new pope spends more time reaching out to children, to those suffering, and to those who may feel estranged or hurt by the Church in the past. He is challenging us to take Christ seriously in our everyday life and model the joy of being a Christian.

“When the Christ of the Holy Gospels is the center of our lives, we should feel the hope Christ brings to a very broken world. If Christ is really the  center of our lives, then we should feel obliged to share in the ministry of Jesus to others. As members of the Body of Christ, we have a moral obligation to bring and share that joy which comes from a faith in our God who loves us - that is what it means to be an evangelizer.”

Father Boeglin said that in the pope’s apostolic exhortation “Evangelii Gaudium – The Joy of the Gospel,” he stated that all Catholics need to embrace a new missionary spirit. “People want to worship where they are welcomed and where they feel the community is alive. We, as parish family, need to mirror the joy of the Gospel so that people want to be part of our faith community.”
