Holy Rosary Team

We let a great Catholic schools story get by us earlier this year. However, the news is good enough to share with our diocesan community even as the new school year is underway.

In early May, teams from Holy Rosary Catholic School competed in the Junior Division of the Academic Super Bowl. “Westward Expansion” served as the theme, so the teams  researched, studied and solved problems from the literature, science, history/geography and mathematics of this time period.

They received material in January and began to study in March and April,” Principal Joan Fredrich said, of their preparations for the May 3 event. “They studied after school, had working lunches and recesses and met during study halls!”

Clearly, the hard work paid off. Locally, Holy Rosary teams earned first place in English/language arts; first place in science; first place in social studies; first place in interdisciplinary studies; and third place in math.

Fredrich said the local scores are sent to the state for tabulation and ranking against all the other regions competing in the Academic Super Bowl. At the state level in Class IV, the Holy Rosary teams earned first place in English/language arts; and first place in interdisciplinary studies; second place in science; third place in social studies; and sixth place in math.

One member each from the English/language arts, math, science and social studies teams also competed as the interdisciplinary studies team.

Following are the members of each team:

English/language arts – Jake Hebebrand, Jake Helfrich, Aiden Krutchen, Mary Schiff (also interdisciplinary studies team), Claire Talbert and Olivia Wheatley. Wheatley served as team captain, and Amy Guerretaz coached the team.

Math – Carson Becker, Emily Lachmann, Captain, Scott Lu, Alex Maxfield (also interdisciplinary studies team), Max Meuth and Bryant Stofleth. Lachmann served as team captain, and Trisha Smith and Kate Jones coached the team.
