HEROES comes to St. Benedict Cathedral School
Donna Halverson, assistant principal, writes, “St. Benedict Cathedral School was notified this summer that it was the recipient of a HEROES grant from the Welborn Baptist Foundation. HEROES stands for Healthy Energetic Ready Outstanding Schools.
“This grant is a three-year commitment which includes student walking programs, staff and community health fairs, nutritional awareness, fitness programs and cafeteria taste-tasting — all designed to promote healthy lifestyles for students, families and staff.
“Grant coordinators, Jon Day and Laurie Schopmeyer, tell us that each grade will be involved in one of the many health education activities this year.”

Happy Birthday!
Jeanne Heltzel, principal at Washington Catholic Elementary School, Washington, celebrates her birthday Sept. 13.
Dan Gilbert, principal at St. Joseph School, Princeton, celebrates his birthday Sept. 15.

Handcrafted
“As you look at the sanctuary you will notice a new easel holding the painting of our new parish which was done by Pauline Hotz,” writes Father Kenneth Walker, pastor at St. John Parish in Loogootee.
“This easel was handcrafted by Evan Hand from oak which was donated by Tracy Burch. Evan matched the wood and the stain almost perfectly to the existing liturgical appointments within the sanctuary.  Please stop by after Mass and notice the wonderful craftsmanship that went into Evan’s work of art.”

Youth ministry
Parishioner Jim Martin is heading up the Youth Ministry program for Annunciation Parish in Evansville.

Retirement
Tim McGuire, chief operating officer for the Diocese of Evansville, writes, “Steve Halbig is retiring on September 26.” He is the circulation and mailing list coordinator for the diocesan Communications Office.
“During his seven years at the Catholic Center, Steve has graciously provided reliable and professional support to the diocese. His approach and easygoing style will be missed.
“As many of you know, Steve joined the diocesan staff after he retired from the Evansville Courier and Press, where he worked for 33 years. Please join me in congratulating Steve as he retires ‘again’ to spend time with his family and pursue his hobbies.”
Welcome!
“I would like all of you to welcome Megan Rasler who is joining Catholic Charities as a full-time intern for the fall semester,” writes Sharon Burns, director.
“Megan hails from Evansville and is currently majoring in human services at Purdue University!  She is minoring in organizational leadership and supervision. She has worked in Food Service at Purdue University while completing her on-campus studies. She possesses extensive volunteer service with the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry and the YWCA Domestic Violence Shelter.
“During her tenure with Catholic Charities she will be working with Laura Chandley and Robin Forney -- helping with the Neighbor-to-Neighbor program and developing a new system for client information tracking.”
