 Count your blessings!

Father Jim Koressel, pastor at St. Peter Parish in Montgomery, writes, “Count your blessings! This growing season has been as close to perfect as we could dare to hope. Timely rains and moderate temperatures will bring about a near record crop production. Pray that all who will begin work shortly to harvest and store this blessing will be free from accidents.

“As many areas of our country, and the world, worry about whether they will have any water to use, we have all we need. It is likely that we even waste water knowing that there is an abundant supply. We too have experienced droughts in the past. We have watched as our crops turn brown in midsummer and offer little, if any, bounty. As few as three years ago we were forced to cut back on our water usage for fear that we would run out of water. Fortunately, we faced only one year of affliction. Some areas of our country are in their third or fourth year of drought. The situation is becoming very serious. The supply of fresh fruits and vegetables we are accustomed to having on demand during the winter months will surely be affected by this situation.

“The drought in other countries makes the one in the U.S.A. seem small. Some countries are measuring their drought in terms of a decade or more. All of us should be more conscious of our use of natural resources.”
