The Church and stem cell research

In a recent bulletin at St. Peter Celestine Parish in Celestine and St. Raphael Parish in Dubois, Father Eugene Schmitt writes, “Many people might be confused about the Church’s position on stem cell research.  The Church supports adult stem cell research which uses cells from a living person or animal that intends to cause no serious harm to them, such as blood transfusions or bone marrow donations.

“Scientists have discovered how to switch these mature cells back to a less mature state. This reprogramming makes them as pliable as young cells. They are called pluripotent stems cells.

“However, the Church is opposed to embryonic stem cell research.  These cells are taken from a human embryo. As a result, this procedure kills this tiny human being. Since the Church believes that life begins at conception, this action is evil. Embryonic stem cell research is nothing short of medical experimentation on human beings in their earliest form.

“Thankfully, all the real advances in stem cell research are coming from adult and pluripotent neither of which the Church opposes.”
