Celebrating the Eucharist

In a letter to parishioners at St. Theresa Church, Evansville, Deacon Dave Seibert writes, “When we come together to celebrate the Eucharist, we use images that remind us of a meal. We’re fed at the Table of the Lord. We are fed by the Body and Blood of Christ. But unlike the number one combo at your favorite fast food stop, there’s no choice between dine in and carry out. Mass is strictly a carry out affair.

The Mass is not a self-contained affair that exists only for an hour within the confines of a particular building. Eucharist begins in the Mass but reaches its climax once we pass through the doors. Eucharist is meant to be shared. It’s meant to be taken from the church and out into the world.

How we take this meal out into the world varies from person to person. We share this meal with others when we visit someone in the hospital. We share this meal when we help at a soup kitchen. We share this meal when we offer a kindness to a stranger. We share this meal when we work to protect the dignity of the poor and marginalized. We share this meal whenever we promote a respect for all life.

“In short, each time we share Christ’s presence in the world with someone else, we share this meal, we carry it out.”
