Parishes in the Diocese of Evansville join others across the world in honoring St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals, and all of God’s creatures. Pet blessings take place on or near Oct. 4, St. Francis’ Feast Day.

In Evansville, 25 pet lovers gathered at Nativity Parish for the fifth year to express their love, and ask for a blessing of God’s creatures and beloved members of their extended families.

Nancy Oskins, and Brad and Terry Lautner Uebelhor organized the Oct. 4 blessing, and Father Henry Kuykendall conducted a prayer service and blessed of more than 30 animals. Phil Montooth of Pet Food Center provided treats for every pet and sponsored the giveaway of a special St. Francis medal – won by a cute little dog named “Boo Boo.”

At St. Boniface Parish on the west side of Evansville, Sacred Heart Church hosted the parish’s first blessing service for pets. Father Brian Emmick and Deacon Dave Siebert led the Oct. 4 service.
