Seminarians at Holy Family

Each year, St. Meinrad Seminary provides two seminarians for Holy Family Parish in Jasper, according to the parish newsletter.

“Our seminarian who helped with religious education last year is now a deacon, who will be preaching homilies at least once a month. He is Deacon Adam Ahern.

“Our new seminarian, who will be helping with religious education this year, is Terrence de Silva. By helping at the parish, the seminarians learn various aspects of serving in a parish, helping them in their priestly formation, as well as helping us.”

Silva is from Sri Lanka, and says his mother was the person who encouraged him in his Catholic studies as a young boy.

He studied for a bachelor’s degree in mathematics at the University of Columbo, and then studied for a master’s degree in industrial mathematics.

In 2006, he was appointed to teach Catechism classes for the Buddhists who wished to be converted, and 2010 he registered in the Diocese of Lexington and entered in the St. Meinrad Seminary.

“Now I am studying in theology, third year, and follow the spiritual and pastoral journey to the priesthood.”

Saying good-bye

Dan Gilbert, principal at St. Joseph School in Princeton, announces that “our bookkeeper for almost 17 years is leaving. Mrs. Stephanie Eckert has another job opportunity. She is a familiar face to so many at our school.  She has survived three principals, two priests and a lot of students.

“Although we are happy for her we will miss the talents she possesses. Her skills have enabled our school and cafeteria to remain financially responsible.

“Tamrun Sokeland will also have her last day as an employee of St. Joseph on Friday. She has a new job opportunity as well. Mrs. Sokeland has served our school in many ways, from the cafeteria, from the library and from extended care. Her smile is contagious and has infected everyone.”
