Praying for vocations

Father Eugene Schmitt, pastor at St. Raphael Parish in Dubois and St. Peter Celestine Parish in Celestine, writes in the bulletin, “I recently attended the Priests, Deacons and Religious Vocation Appreciation Dinner, and Bishop Charles talked about the importance of ‘a culture for vocations.’

“Many of us have heard of John Paul II refer to our society creating ‘a culture of death,’ and we as the people of God need to respond by creating ‘a culture of life.’

“However, Bishop Thompson reminded us of the need to create an environment where all vocations can flourish. I thought, ‘What do we need to do to ensure that healthy vocations of marriage, single life, religious life and priesthood can be nurtured in our young people and grow?’

“It made me think about the Scripture passage and parable of the sower and the seed (Mark 4:1-8). This passage talks about some of the seed falling on rocky ground, in the thorns, on the path and rich soil. The sower is God and the seed is every person’s vocation.”

He asked, “Are we as a Church and people of God creating an environment for the vocation of every person to germinate and grow to their full potential?”

Father Schmitt concluded by writing, “The key to all vocations is prayer. Prayer is needed by the individual discerning God’s call and by the Church.”
