High School And College Sports Note From Across The Diocese

Student-athletes sign with colleges – This report includes photos from Rivet High School in Vincennes, where golfers Peyton Meeks and Carly Waggoner have signed letters of intent to continue their playing careers at William Jewell College and the University of Evansville, respectively.

At Mater Dei High School, seniors Tori Schickel, Ben Sellers, and Kayla Shane signed national letters of intent on Nov. 12, the first day of the fall signing period. Schickel signed with Butler University to play basketball, Sellers signed to play baseball at Western Illinois University. Shane signed with the University of Missouri, St. Louis, to play volleyball.

A member of the Indiana Junior All-Stars Core 6, Schickel has helped lead Mater Dei to two state championships and a state runner-up in women’s hoops. She is a three-time all-conference selection in basketball, and a three-time all-conference honoree in women’s volleyball.

Sellers was the starting first baseman for the Wildcats’ 2A state-runner-up baseball team and an all-conference selection in 2014. He also is a three-year letter winner in basketball.

Shane is a two-year letter-winner in volleyball.

 

Mater Dei player earns Mental Attitude Award – Soccer player Emily Bradley earned the Indiana High School Athletic Association Mental Attitude Award at the 2014 IHSAA Class 1A state finals. IHSAA will donate $1,000 to Mater Dei in Bradley’s name.

 

State Basketball Rankings – The girls basketball team at Vincennes’ Rivet High School has been ranked in the IHSAA Top 10 in Class 1A. Through Dec. 2, the Memorial High School boys basketball team was ranked No. 6 in IHSAA Class 3A. Through Dec. 7, the Mater Dei girls basketball team was ranked No. 11 across the state – in all classes – by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

 

Women’s College Basketball Update – Memorial High School graduate Anna Hackert is averaging 14.4 points and 12.4 rebounds through Dec. 8 at the University of Southern Indiana. She also has five blocked shots and nine steals. The Screaming Eagles are 6-1. Memorial graduate Mallory Ladd is averaging 17.3 points and 7.9 rebounds at the University of Evansville. She also has seven blocked shots and 11 steals. The Lady Aces are 3-4 through Dec. 8. Hackert and Ladd are senior starters for their respective teams. At Indiana University, 2014 Mater Dei graduate Maura Muensterman has played in five of the Hoosiers’ first eight games, and has averaged one point in 2 rebounds in just under seven minutes per game. The Hoosiers are 7-1 through Dec. 8.

 

Wannemuehler wraps up successful sophomore season at N.C. State – 2012 Mater Dei graduate Travis Wannemuehler started all 18 men’s soccer games at North Carolina State University this fall. He is one of only two players who started every game for the Wolfpack; junior Holden Fender is the other. A communications major, Wannemuehler wrapped up his sophomore season on the squad with four goals and three assists, finishing third on the team in scoring. He trained last summer with the U.S. national team.
